School of Land and Environment Wine Technology & Viticulture

Why study viticulture & winemaking with us?

The Dookie Campus is the focus of the University of Melbourne's viticulture and wine production teaching and research programs. Some undergraduate programs are also offered at the University's Parkville campus.

Dookie has a long history in production and research in viticulture and winemaking. The first vineyards were planted on an experimental basis in the 1870s and viticulture and wine making were taught at Dookie from 1883. At that time the Dookie hills were a famous wine producing area, producing a quarter of Australia's total vintage, and home to Australia's largest winery Chateau Dookie.

The University's commitment to viticulture and wine making programs was recently strengthened by the formation of the University of Melbourne Wine Industry Centre (UMWIC) in 2004, based at Dookie. It coordinates all grape growing and wine production related teaching, research and commercial activities of the University.

UMWIC offers a comprehensive range of wine industry education from:

  • Introductory Short Courses
  • Diplomas
  • Degrees
  • Graduate Certificates and Diplomas
  • Masters and PhD
